Frequently Asked QuestionsDo my trees get planted during the shmitta year?
The upcoming year commencing with Rosh Hashanah is a shmitta, or sabbatical, year, during which the Torah commands that the land in Israel must lie fallow and cannot be worked or cultivated. To comply with these regulations, JNF ceases all tree planting before Rosh Hashanah and does not plant trees in the ground during the shmitta year. Seedlings are prepared and transplanted into growing containers in nurseries under temporary roofs, and seedlings and trees that were planted before the shmitta year (in the nursery or field) may be tended to. Traditional planting ceremonies will not take place, but there will be alternative ceremonies
