GOT WATER PROBLEMS?
JEWISH NATIONAL FUND ANNOUNCES U.S. WATER SUMMITS TO SHARE ISRAEL’S
WATER TECHNOLOGY IN DROUGHT-AFFECTED REGIONS
Summits to Spotlight Seth Siegel’s New Book,
Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution For A Water-Starved World

New York, NY: August 24, 2015 – With a global water crisis upon us and Israel having gone from water deprived to water abundant, Jewish National Fund (JNF) today announced that it is sharing Israel’s drought solutions in the United States by launching of a series of Water Summits beginning October 26 in Chicago.
At each Water Summit, keynote speaker Seth M. Siegel, author of the soon-to-be-released book Let There Be Water: Israel's Solution for a Water-Starved World (St. Martin’s Press; September 15, 2015), will discuss global water issues and Israel’s successes in water governance, infrastructure and technology. In addition, a panel of regional experts will confer on local challenges and break-out sessions will bring participants together to formulate plans to meet long-term water needs.
According to Siegel, “We are on the brink of a global water crisis and California’s drought is only the beginning. The U.S. government predicts that forty of our fifty states – and sixty percent of the earth's land surface – will soon face alarming gaps between the supply and growing demand for water. Without immediate action, food prices will rise, economic growth will slow, and political instability is likely to follow. I thought that rather than just laying out the problem, concerned citizens and policymakers would want to have a model for what actually works and how we can blunt the worst of this coming water crisis. Israel is that model.”
Laureine Greenbaum, chair of JNF’s National Water Task Force commented, “For many years, JNF has worked to help bolster Israel’s water economy by developing alternative water sources and advancing Israeli agriculture while improving the environmental water quality and saving the country millions every year. We are so happy to partner with Seth on these summits to heighten American awareness on this relevant and urgent issue.”
JNF Water Summits are currently planned in the following cities: Chicago, IL: October 26, 2015; Austin, TX: December 1-3; San Diego, CA: December 8-10; Denver, CO: January 26-28, 2016; Las Vegas, NV: February 2-4; Los Angeles, CA: March 1-3; Washington, DC: June 8-9; Albany, NY (TBD); Boston, MA (TBD); New York, NY (TBD); Phoenix, AZ (TBD).
JNF has been at the forefront of water management and conservation in Israel for three decades, increasing the country's total water supply by 12% and helping Israel become a leader in water recycling. JNF's network of 250 recycled water reservoirs provide almost half of the water used for agriculture in Israel, saving enough freshwater to meet the needs of 4.4 million people a year. With JNF's assistance, more than 85% of the sewage water in Israel is recycled and reused, the highest rate in the world. To put that into context, Spain comes in a distant second, reusing 17% of its wastewater, and the U.S, at 5%.
