Did you know that with nearly 1.5 million Jewish people in the eight counties that compose New York and its environs the Jewish community in New York City continues to be the largest concentration of Jewish people in the world?
As we have done in years past, this year, JNF’s Greater New York Zone rose to meet the challenges facing the land and people of Israel with the help of this committed, vibrant community.
- When a local NYC mom came back from a fact-finding mission to Sderot, we created MOMS for ISRAEL, a grassroots campaign that involved hundreds of women across the country. The campaign raised more than $250,000 to send nearly 500 children to summer camps around Israel and away from the trauma of daily life in Sderot.
- To reach the next generation of Jewish leaders, the GNY Zone created JNFuture, attracting the best and brightest New Yorkers in their 20’s and 30’s. JNFuture emphasizes the significant environmental work being done by JNF reaching this group where they’re at. This as well as JNFuture’s signature event -- “Shabbat in the Park,” which makes JNF the only major Jewish organization to celebrate Shabbat in Central Park -- has contributed to JNFuture’s growth and chapters have now formed in Boston, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, Denver, Miami, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
Recognizing that reaching the next generation of Jewish leaders around the world is the logical next step, JNFuture GNY has taken the lead in the JNFuture Global Initiative. Stay tuned for details on a global event encompassing 20 countries banding together on the same day to make a difference in Israel together.
- Our zone is contributing to the creation of the Be’er Sheva River Park which is revitalizing the capitol of the Negev with the construction of a 1,700 acre riverfront park, an extensive environmental and economic development project. NY has specifically adopted the 80-dunam lake as a central project.
- Recognizing the need for donor engagement opportunities beyond traditional fundraising, the Volunteer Division was created to engage, educate and energize a group of Greater New York volunteers to raise support and awareness for JNF’s projects in Israel and programs in the United States.
The Greater New York zone has regional offices in Manhattan, Long Island, and Westchester/Connecticut. Click here to find out more about how you can make a difference in Israel by getting involved with JNF where you live.
