Jon Entine

Author on the DNA of Jewish history and identity

Jon

Jon Entine

Pioneering author on the DNA of Jewish history and identity, and director of the Genetic Literacy Project at George Mason University.

Jon Entine is a think tank scholar and author, with an expertise in ancestry, genetics, Jewish history and Jewish identity. He is the author of six books, including Abraham’s Children: Race, Identity and the DNA of the Chosen People, which examines in dramatic, story-telling fashion the history of the Jewish people through the prism of DNA, and our deep ancestral connection to modern Israel. It is a comprehensive response to the fiction that the “Jewish people” is an historical fiction, that Jews are primarily descendants of converts, as some have claimed. His previous acclaimed bestseller, Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate History and Why We’re Afraid to Talk About It, addressed the Jewish domination of basketball in the first half of the 20th century.

Abraham’s Children was featured on the cover of Reform Judaism magazine and profiled on Jewish Life Television in a report viewed on YouTube more than 400,000 times. Kirkus Reviews called it an “epic tale” and Nature Genetics described the book as a “broad, well documented sweep of Jewish history that will inform even the most knowledgeable of readers.” Ha’aretz engaged Jon in a conversation about the fascinating link between Jewish ancestry, genetic diseases and Jewish achievement.

Jon has written extensively about identity and genetics in publications around the world. He has been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, GQ, Times of London, Toronto Globe and Mail, Jerusalem Post and the Jewish Telegraph Agency, among hundreds of publications. He was profiled on ABC 20/20 and has appeared on almost every major television news and radio show, and dozens of programs around the world. Jon draws on his production skills as a former television news executive in his presentations on a range of issues, including the DNA of Jewish History, Jewish Diseases and Achievement and Jewish views on sustainability.

Jon is director of the Genetic Literacy Projct and Senior Fellow at the Center for Health and Risk Communication and George Mason University. He is a long-time fellow at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research in Washington, D.C. and a columnist with the British-based international magazine Ethical Corporation. He runs a sustainability consultancy, ESG MediaMetrics. Jon spent 20 years as a network TV news producer at the three major U.S. networks, winning 20 journalism honors, including a National Press Club Award and Emmys for specials on the reform movements in China and the Soviet Union. He served as Tom Brokaw's long-time producer at NBC News and executive in charge of documentaries, and was a producer with ABC 20/20 and Primetime. He has been a visiting scholar at Columbia University, Arizona State University, NYU and Miami (Ohio) University. Jon earned a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship in Journalism at the University of Michigan.
