Positively Israel, JNF's Work in Israel

Sharon Gilbert is a General Dentist, specializing in Neuromuscular and Cosmetic dentistry in Weston, Florida. She received her degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1983, and then completed a general practice residency at St. Joseph's Hospital in Patterson, NJ. A fourth generation dentist, she practiced for many years in New York with her husband and her father prior to moving down to Florida.

Sharon has always been involved in Jewish causes. While a student at Vanderbilt University, she chaired the UJA campaign her junior and senior years. Her first trip to Israel came in 1983 when she and her husband spent five weeks in Israel on a kibbutz through the organization, American Dental Volunteers for Israel. This trip helped solidify her love for the land and people of Israel. She went back a second time in 2008, hiking part of the Israel National Trail with Hazon, learning about the issues concerning sustainability that confront modern Israel.

Upon moving to Weston, Sharon and her family became involved with B'nai Aviv, a Conservative synagogue in their community. Sharon served on the board for many years, first as Adult Education Chair, and then as Ritual Chair. She then moved up to the Executive Board, where she served as Ritual VP, and then eventually as President for two terms, and then finally as Immediate Past President. She has sung with the B'nai Aviv choir for the last 17 years, and served as accompanist and lay leader of the Youth Choir for 10 years.

Sharon has also been a Lion of Judah, and a godparent for JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options). She and her husband, Mark served as the chairpersons for the 2011 JAFCO Gala.

Sharon and Mark have two children; Matthew, who is twenty years old, and lives in Fort Lauderdale, and Rebekah, twenty four, who lives in Manhattan.  Both children went to David Posnack Hebrew Day School for many years. Rebekah is an HSI graduate and has recently joined JNFuture.

Sharon is very proud to be part of Makor and is looking forward to her increased involvement with JNF.

Makor (Hebrew for “source”) is a specially-trained cadre of highly-involved Jewish National Fund volunteers. Our primary role is to support the core functions of JNF by direct fundraising. Thus, we identify prospective donors, conduct direct solicitations in our own communities and around the United States and assist in educating the public about the JNF and its projects.

Makor also serves as a source for lay leadership. We are leaders in our own communities, and provide training and inspiration for other community leaders on solicitation techniques, board development and outreach and on the work of the JNF. Makor members also assume JNF leadership positions on a national level.

We are proud leaders who are committed to the mission of the JNF, the caretaker of the land of Israel forever. In addition, Makor is a source of innovation within the JNF. Our diverse backgrounds, coupled with our common commitment, foster a free-flow of ideas to keep JNF as relevant and productive as possible.

Makor members travel to Israel each year to study JNF projects and programs in depth, and bring their insights and experiences to you. Members speak at no charge.
