On Wednesday, November 18 2009, Moms from across San Diego--and even one from Orange County--came together to learn the art of cooking gourmet Jewish recipes at Jewish National Fund's “Foods from Around the Jewish World” cooking class at the home of Jodi Abel, owner of LaJollaCooks4U.
Women of all ages were schooled in how to prepare simply delectable Moroccan Cedar-planked Salmon, Israeli Falafel Salad and Hungarian Raised Coffee Cake among other Ashkenazi and Sepharadi delicacies. The hands-on experience allowed the guests to get into the kitchen and to learn ‘on the job’ from Ms. Abel, a former member of the San Diego Board of Directors, in the comfort of Abel's stunning Mount Soledad home. All recipes prepared by “Moms for Israel” supporters were then enjoyed at a patio luncheon.
This event was the second in a on-going series of “Moms for Israel” campaign events in the San Diego region. The first event, held over the summer, was an evening of ‘Tacos & Margaritas, Browsing & Buying!’ at the home of San Diego Board member, Debbie Seid. Both events raised awareness and funds for the children and families of Sderot.
Co-Chairs of the gourmet cooking event, Mimi Gross, Debbie Elghanian, Lauren Lizerbram and Debbie Seid, spoke to the crowd about the first-of-its-kind, secure indoor recreational center built by JNF in less than one year, when Sderot’s stalwart Mayor, David Bouskila, asked JNF for a safe place for children, teenagers and even their parents and grandparents to gather, play and socialize without fear of Qassam rocket fire. Hundreds of Israelis homes and properties have been destroyed, over 700 Israelis wounded, and thousands psychologically traumatized by Palestinian rocket fire, estimated at between 8,000 and 10,000 attacks over the past 8 years. According to a recent Sderot Media article, an entire generation of Israeli children is being born into the world of “Tseva Adom,” the Red Alert siren that when it screams forth, tells Sderot is that they have but 15 seconds to find shelter from incoming rockets.
