October 6, 2006 -- Los Angeles,CA -- William and Elizabeth Shatner will make their first U.S. public appearance on behalf of The William and Elizabeth Shatner-Jewish National Fund Therapeutic Riding Consortium Endowment for Israelwhen they attend “An Evening of Magical Information” on October 11.
The Shatners will be on hand to meet the attendees and talk about the trip they took to Israel in May to assess the needs and survey some of the therapeutic horseback riding centers that will benefit from the endowment.
The $10 million endowment will support therapeutic riding programs for the disabled throughout Israel so that more individuals can benefit from the essential contribution equine therapy makes to the overall well-being of the disabled. Long-term, the hope is to forge cooperative networks between Israel and neighboring countries in support of therapeutic riding for the disabled.
Anita Shkedi, founder of the Israel National Therapeutic Riding Association (INTRA) near Netanya, will also speak about the benefits of equine therapy. More than 700 people, ages 2-60, receive treatment at INTRA every month.
An experienced equestrian and well-known in therapeutic riding circles, Shkedi and her husband, Giora, have created training programs for those who work with the disabled. Already 500 trainers have graduated from this program now based at the Wingate Institute outside of Tel Aviv.
Equine therapy is a powerful means to improve the rider’s physical, emotional and social skills while teaching essential skills to promote a healthier and more rewarding life. The symmetry and three dimensional swinging motion of the horse correspond to the movement of the human walk, providing riders with new ways to strengthen physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Hollywood celebrity William Shatner has a long history of supporting therapeutic riding in North America. As a spokesman for this JNF consortium Shatner is committed to making a difference in Israel. His guiding principle is inclusion without regard to gender, religion, ability, disability, ethnicity, or social background. Through the JNF endowment, funds will be raised for the many centers in Israel to improve existing conditions, provide student scholarships, increase outreach to riders from all walks of life, promote standards of program excellence including providing networks for continuing educational programs, and find ways to build sustainable and lasting programs for future expansion.

JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF) began in 1901 as a dream and vision to reestablish a homeland in Israel for Jewish people everywhere. Jews the world over collected coins in iconic JNF Blue Boxes, purchasing land and planting trees until ultimately, their dream of a Jewish homeland was a reality. JNF gives all generations of Jews a unique voice in building a prosperous future for the land of Israel and its people.
JNF embodies both heart and action; our work is varied in scope but singular in benefit. We strive to bring an enhanced quality of life to all of Israel’s residents, and translate these advancements to the world beyond. JNF is greening the desert with millions of trees, building thousands of parks, creating new communities and cities for generations of Israelis to call home, bolstering Israel’s water supply, helping develop innovative arid-agriculture techniques, and educating both young and old about the founding and importance of Israel and Zionism.
JNF is a registered 501(c)(3) organization and United Nations NGO, which continuously earns top ratings from charity overseers.
