Jewish National Fund Adds a Special Touch to Tu B’Shevat Celebration

Contact: Sarit Schonbrun • JNF Communications Manager • 212-879-9305 ext. 222 • sschonbrun@jnf.org

March 6, 2006-- Sunrise, FL-- On an unusually brisk February afternoon in Southern Florida, over one hundred people gathered to commemorate the day that Judaism marks as the official start of spring’s rebirth.

This year, Jewish National Fund added a special touch to the Tu B’Shevat Seder at Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options (JAFCO), a non-profit organization in Sunrise, Florida that strives to preserve a sense of Jewish heritage for children who have been separated from their families.   Each place at the Seder table was set with a copy of JNF’s Branching Out haggadah, donated by JNF’s Israel Advocacy and Education Department.

In late January, JAFCO Community Relations Coordinator Rana Roseberg contacted JNF after learning about “Tu B’Shevat in the Schools” on JNF’s website.  Through the annual program, JNF provides educational materials to over 200 schools around the country.  Roseberg was interested in ordering 100 copies of Branching Out, normally offered for $2 each.

“I called JNF and started speaking about the Seder we had planned and the work that we do, and in the end they were able to donate the haggadot to us,” said Roseberg.

The Seder brought together residents of JAFCO’s Jewish Children’s Village, emergency shelter, and group homes as well as community members and donors, and was followed by a tree planting ceremony.  Roseberg called the haggadot a beautiful edition to the celebration that will be used year after year.

JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF) began in 1901 as a dream and vision to reestablish a homeland in Israel for Jewish people everywhere. Jews the world over collected coins in iconic JNF Blue Boxes, purchasing land and planting trees until ultimately, their dream of a Jewish homeland was a reality. JNF gives all generations of Jews a unique voice in building a prosperous future for the land of Israel and its people.

JNF embodies both heart and action; our work is varied in scope but singular in benefit. We strive to bring an enhanced quality of life to all of Israel’s residents, and translate these advancements to the world beyond. JNF is greening the desert with millions of trees, building thousands of parks, creating new communities and cities for generations of Israelis to call home, bolstering Israel’s water supply, helping develop innovative arid-agriculture techniques, and educating both young and old about the founding and importance of Israel and Zionism.

JNF is a registered 501(c)(3) organization and United Nations NGO, which continuously earns top ratings from charity overseers.
