Jewish National Fund Says “Thank You”

Donors Recognized for Support of Operation Security Blanket

Contact: Sherri Morr • JNF Western Zone Director • 415-677-9600 • smorr@jnf.org

September 8, 2006 -- San Francisco, CA -- To recognize San Francisco donors for making a difference in the lives of Israelis this summer, Jewish National Fund (JNF) will host a wine and cheese dessert reception on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. at the JCC of San Francisco.

At the start of the war with Hezbollah, JNF launched Operation Security Blanket, a very successful emergency campaign that raised more than $5 million in just under five weeks, with close to $200,000 coming from northern California.

Donations were used to send nearly 10,000 children cooped up in bomb shelters up north to summer camps in central Israel away from rocket fire; purchase emergency firefighting equipment and fire trucks to help the foresters and volunteers battle fires caused by Katyushas; and build security roads along the Gaza border to provide safe travel for residents and their children.

“All our donors and those who saw our ads were grateful to JNF for launching an immediate campaign and providing a ready vehicle for helping with the urgent situation in Israel,” said Sherri Morr, JNF Western Zone Director.  “'Be sure to get those children out of bunkers’ was a phrase we heard over and over again.”

Bud Levin, JNF National Campaign Chair, and John Rothman, former president of the JNF Greater San Francisco Bay region, will show donors how their dollars impacted Israeli families during the war.  In August, Levin traveled to Israel, witnessing firsthand the damage sustained by northern cities and JNF forests.  He also visited children in JNF summer camps and met with the heroic foresters who risked their lives to save the forests as Katyushas fell around them and Israeli outgoing artillery fire flew above them.

The JCC of San Francisco is located at 3400 California Street in San Francisco.  For more information, contact Sherri Morr at 415-677-9600 or smorr@jnf.org.

JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF) began in 1901 as a dream and vision to reestablish a homeland in Israel for Jewish people everywhere. Jews the world over collected coins in iconic JNF Blue Boxes, purchasing land and planting trees until ultimately, their dream of a Jewish homeland was a reality. JNF gives all generations of Jews a unique voice in building a prosperous future for the land of Israel and its people.

JNF embodies both heart and action; our work is varied in scope but singular in benefit. We strive to bring an enhanced quality of life to all of Israel’s residents, and translate these advancements to the world beyond. JNF is greening the desert with millions of trees, building thousands of parks, creating new communities and cities for generations of Israelis to call home, bolstering Israel’s water supply, helping develop innovative arid-agriculture techniques, and educating both young and old about the founding and importance of Israel and Zionism.

JNF is a registered 501(c)(3) organization and United Nations NGO, which continuously earns top ratings from charity overseers.
