ISRAELI AMBASSADOR MICHAEL OREN TO RECEIVE JNF’S SHALOM PEACE AWARD
Award Recognizes Dedication to Peace, Humanity and American-Israeli Friendship
New York, NY: January 15, 2015 - Michael Oren, the former Israeli Ambassador to the United States will receive Jewish National Fund’s (JNF) Shalom Peace Award at JNF’s 2015 National Conference in Chicago this October.
The Shalom Peace Award, one of JNF’s highest honors, recognizes those individuals who have contributed to Shalom Bayit, or peace within the community.

Oren served as Israel’s Ambassador to the United States from 2009 to 2013. He currently holds the Abba Eban Chair in International Diplomacy at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, and is Ambassador-in‐Residence at the Atlantic Council. Dr. Oren serves as the global chairman of the Michael Levin Lone Soldier Center and as the representative of the State of Israel on the Birthright Steering Committee.
Educated at Princeton and Columbia, Ambassador Oren has been a visiting professor at Yale, Harvard, and Georgetown, and was a Distinguished Fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem. An expert in Middle East History, Ambassador Oren’s last two books, Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East from 1776 to the Present and Six Days of War, were New York Times bestsellers. Born in the US, Ambassador Oren made Aliyah and enlisted as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, seeing action in the Lebanon War. As an officer, Ambassador Oren served as a liaison to the U.S. Sixth Fleet during the Gulf War, and an IDF Spokesman during the Second Lebanon War and Operation Cast Lead. He and his wife, Sally, have three children.
Ambassador Oren is among only a dozen recipients of the award since it was initiated in 1984. Past recipients include: Vice President Al Gore; retired Gen. Colin Powell; slain Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's widow, Jehan Sadat; former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; Larry King; and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.
