New York, NY: July 14, 2014 Leaders of New York government and Jewish organizations stood together today at a rally on the steps of City Hall to declare that New York stands with Israel during Operation Protective Edge.
Attending the rally, organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, UJA-Federation of New York in conjunction with the Jewish Caucus of the New York City Council, were Harold Cohen, Chief Operating Officer of Jewish National Fund (JNF); Congressman Eliot Engel, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Congresswoman Nita Lowey; Ido Aharoni, the Israeli Consul General in New York; NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver; Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, and many others.
Mr. Cohen remarked, “Since Operation Protective Edge was launched last week to restore peace and stability in Gaza, Jewish National Fund went into crisis mode and has provided Israel’s community in Halutza, a new community in the Negev for people who evacuated from Gaza in 2005 an area that is now besieged by rockets from Gaza with 24 mobile bomb shelters to provide safety to residents there. We are providing Israeli firefighters with much needed equipment and supplies to combat the fires caused by rockets assaults, and JNF’s Indoor Recreation Center outfitted with bomb shelters is open 24 hours a day to give the children and families of Sderot a safe place to play. As always, we stand with Israel and will continue to do all we can in support the land and people of our Homeland.”
In addition to delivering mobile bomb shelters and equipment for firefighters, JNF has supported its partner Green Horizons youth leadership group with activities for children in bomb shelters, along with food and essentials; brought in extra professionals to aid and care for people with severe disabilities at the Aleh Negev rehabilitative village; worked with the Society for Preservation of Israel Heritage Sites to give free admission at 60 sites across Israel; and with JNF partner LOTEM, taken people with special needs to Israel’s northern areas and away from danger zones.

JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF) began in 1901 as a dream and vision to reestablish a homeland in Israel for Jewish people everywhere. Jews the world over collected coins in iconic JNF Blue Boxes, purchasing land and planting trees until ultimately, their dream of a Jewish homeland was a reality. JNF gives all generations of Jews a unique voice in building a prosperous future for the land of Israel and its people.
JNF embodies both heart and action; our work is varied in scope but singular in benefit. We strive to bring an enhanced quality of life to all of Israel’s residents, and translate these advancements to the world beyond. JNF is greening the desert with millions of trees, building thousands of parks, creating new communities and cities for generations of Israelis to call home, bolstering Israel’s water supply, helping develop innovative arid-agriculture techniques, and educating both young and old about the founding and importance of Israel and Zionism.
JNF is a registered 501(c)(3) organization and United Nations NGO, which continuously earns top ratings from charity overseers.
