JNF hosted its annual New England Guardian of Israel Award Breakfast at the Newton Marriott on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. The successful event honored Robert Abrams, Principal Attorney at Robert T. Abrams J.D., and Robert Cohan, founding partner of Cohan Rasnick Myerson Plaut LLP.

The Guardian of Israel Award is given in recognition of outstanding community involvement, dedication to the cause of American-Israeli friendship, and devotion to peace and security of human life. The proud recipents, Robert Abrams and Robert Cohan, are esteemed attorneys and JNF Boston Presidents Emeriti who have shown outstanding commitment to the land of Israel and its people, and have helped JNF rise to new levels of recognition and awareness through their dedication.

“Forty-three years ago today, my father was honored by JNF,” said Abrams upon receiving the Guardian of Israel award. “I represent the next one of four generations of JNF supporters. At the age of eight, I would go to all my neighbors with the blue box collecting money and haven’t stopped since. I will continue to raise funds for JNF and  I couldn’t be more dedicated to an organization as important and relevant as this one.”

Proceeds from the Breakfast benefit the Lake in JNF’s Be’er Sheva River Park, the largest metropolitan park in Israel located in the capital of the Negev. Through its Blueprint Negev initiative, JNF recognized the development and expansion of Be’er Sheva as the key to making the Negev an attractive place for a new generation of Israelis to call home. The centerpiece of JNF’s efforts in Be’er Sheva is the development of the 1,300-acre Park, an innovative urban renewal project, modeled on the famous San Antonio River Walk and similar environmental reclamation projects, becoming an anchor for tourism and commerce and is transforming Be’er Sheva into a green, vibrant, modern city.

“JNF is working to turn Beer Sheva into a place people want to go,” said Cohan at the breakfast. The center of the river park is a lake- it's a beautiful and necessary thing, making it a place to call home for its residents. I and proud and humbled to be honored by JNF. To be involved with such a fluid and dynamic organization, like JNF, is such a blessing.”

“Robert Abrams and Robert Cohan epitomize leadership within our organization,” shared Sara Hefez, Director of New England. “JNF is fortunate to have them within our family. Their dedication and support will not only continue the development of Be’er Sheva, but the land of Israel and its people as well.”

JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF) began in 1901 as a dream and vision to reestablish a homeland in Israel for Jewish people everywhere. Jews the world over collected coins in iconic JNF Blue Boxes, purchasing land and planting trees until ultimately, their dream of a Jewish homeland was a reality. JNF gives all generations of Jews a unique voice in building a prosperous future for the land of Israel and its people.

JNF embodies both heart and action; our work is varied in scope but singular in benefit. We strive to bring an enhanced quality of life to all of Israel’s residents, and translate these advancements to the world beyond. JNF is greening the desert with millions of trees, building thousands of parks, creating new communities and cities for generations of Israelis to call home, bolstering Israel’s water supply, helping develop innovative arid-agriculture techniques, and educating both young and old about the founding and importance of Israel and Zionism.

JNF is a registered 501(c)(3) organization and United Nations NGO, which continuously earns top ratings from charity overseers.
