Kenneth B. Segel
President of the Capital District
Ken Segel’s past and present JNF titles and activities make for quite an impressive resume. He serves on JNF’s National Board as the National Major Gifts Chair, National Assistant Vice President of Community Relations, is a member of Makor, President of the Capital District Board, and is an active lay leader in the Miami-Dade region in Florida during the winter. Ken previously served as National Chair of Ammunition Hill and chaired the very successful Road to Jerusalem Mission in 2012. His passion for JNF and Israel is second to none and in 2013 he was named the National Campaign All-Star.
An Albany native, Ken became an integral part of the JNF family seven years ago through an initiative focused on developing donors and awareness in small communities, chaired by Dr. Melinda Wolf, JNF Vice President of Administration and National General Campaign Chair. Ever since, his commitment to JNF has been indispensable to the success of JNF’s mission.
“Ken embodies leadership,” shared Sharon Freedman, National Campaign Director. “He understands the importance of ‘making the ask.’ He has risen to the National Board in such a short time because of his steadfast commitment.”
Ken, a Principal of Schuyler Companies, a commercial real estate developer, founded the Capital District Board and has served as its President since 2009. The Albany 5K Walk for Water, was his brainchild, and when it comes to JNF, it’s a family affair; Ken and his wife Nancie are Century Council and Negev Society members. Nancie also serves on the Capital District Board and is a Sapphire Society member, and their two daughters Amie and Julie are JNFuture members.
“Ken is the kind of lay leader that we dream of,” said Sara Hefez, Director, New England. “Ken chaired two beautiful Tree of Life dinners; in 2008 JNF honored Jane Golub and Rabbi Paul & Faye Silton and in 2009 Malka & Eitan Evan and Susan & Martin Farber were honored. Both events were a tremendous success, raising much needed funds for Green Horizons, a youth enrichment and leadership program, in the Eshkol region of Israel.”
Ken’s love for Israel began in 1970 as a student at Tel Aviv University, where he spent his junior year of college. In addition to his involvement with JNF, he is a past President of the United Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, past Chairman of the Federation Community Endowment Fund; and currently serves as Chairman of the Israel Bonds Cabinet for upstate New York. Being a strong supporter of Jewish education, Ken also served as President of the Bet Shraga Hebrew Academy.
