JNF sponsors a network of regional agricultural R&D stations in Israel’s peripheral regions where leading scientists and technicians work closely with local farmers and Israeli research institutes and universities to increase agricultural sustainability, profitability and stability by:

  • Optimizing growth regime variables such as light, temperature, humidity, irrigation and nutrition to cut costs and increase crop efficiency;
  • Identifying and introducing new strains of agricultural crops by testing flowers and vegetables for attractiveness, taste, color, shelf life and timeliness for overseas markets;
  • Expanding aquaculture in Israel’s southern arid zone regions by developing fishery farms and new species and strains of fish for raising in closed circuit filtration ponds supplied by locally drilled underground geothermal waters;
  • Finding solutions to soil diseases;
  • Developing organic-grown agricultural export products targeting the American, Japanese and other overseas markets in the pest-free “Clean Arava” zone which produces 65 per cent of Israel’s fresh vegetable exports and 15 per cent of its cut flower exports;
  • Monitoring, controlling and eradicating the harmful Mediterranean Fruit Fly which attacks more than 260 fruit and vegetable varieties in the region, in cooperation with Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, by releasing millions of sterile male Mediterranean Fruit Flies imported from Guatemala to reduce fertility and procreation.
  • Afforestation and land reclamation in Israel. As such, it plays a vital role in protecting and preserving open spaces.
