Susan Shpeen Walk for Water

Israel’s useable water supply is at an all-time low. Compounding the limited sources of water in the desert climate, and several consecutive years of severe drought have exacerbated the problem: Israelis need much more water than their climate can provide. Without water, farms will not be able to produce, greenery will die, and the people will suffer.

The good news is, you can help!

Please join us for our second annual Walk for Water on Sunday, May 1, 2011.

By registering and collecting money to alleviate this water emergency, you can be an active part of Israel’s solution!

Your support of this event will raise money to benefit The Parson’s Water Fund.  This fund is helping access new sources of water (for example drilling for new aquifers), will aid in the construction of 40 new reservoirs, and will fund advocacy, research, education, and river clean-up.  The goal of JNF is to raise $100 million to develop new water resources for Israel and her neighbors.

T-shirts, refreshments, parking, and restrooms will be provided!

There will also be shorter options (a 1K or 2.5K) for those walkers who want to participate but are overwhelmed by the longevity of a 5K.

Susan Shpeen was a loving wife, mother, loyal friend, esteemed member of the Capital District community and passionate about the State of Israel. She took particular pleasure and pride in the commitment of her family to make the world a better place. She passed away on November 24, 2009, and is survived by her husband of 31 years, Rabbi Scott L. Shpeen, and her two children, Hilary and Adam. Susan’s true love of Israel emanated not only from the many trips she co-led with Scott over the years, most recently February 2009, but also from living in Jerusalem for a year (1979-1980) while Scott attended the first year of rabbinical school at HUC-JIR.

She served as the Executive Director of the Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center, and over her fifteen year tenure she actively built the JCC into the strong, vibrant institution it is today. She also volunteered her skills to various community endeavors, including JNF’s 2009 Tree of Life Dinner and Congregation Beth Emeth’s Sisterhood, enthusiastically holding various positions on the sisterhood board, most recently acting as its vice president.

We too have been inspired by her lifelong commitment to her family, the Capital District Community and the State of Israel and it is our intention that by honoring her memory with this walk to support the Parson’s Water Fund we will continue her legacy.
