Israel's ancient history is widely known, with destinations like the Kotel and Masada featuring prominently on nearly every itinerary. But sites that tell of Israel's rich modern history are less renowned.
The Society for Preservation of Israel Heritage Sites (SPIHS) was established to protect the irreplaceable historical buildings and heritage sites associated with Israel’s re-birth. JNF is raising funds for the over 150 sites in need of restoration, and was instrumental in the renovation of Atlit Detention Camp, which included restoring an original ship that transported Jews during the illegal immigration of the British mandate.
Another project is the Ayalon Institute, a secret Haganah bullet factory in operation from 1946-48 that is an exciting tourist and educational destination.

Ben Gurion's Israel Independence Speech, May 14, 1948
"On the 29th November, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz-Israel; the General Assembly required the inhabitants of Eretz-Israel to take such steps as were necessary on their part for the implementation of that resolution. This recognition by the United Nations of the right of the Jewish people to establish their State is irrevocable... This right is the natural right of the Jewish people to be masters of their own fate, like all other nations, in their own sovereign State. Thus members and representatives of the Jews of Palestine and of the Zionist movement upon the end of the British Mandate, by virtue of 'natural and historic right' and based on the United Nations resolution… Hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish state in the land of Israel to be known as the State of Israel."
