Jewish National Fund-USA’s Alternative Break Inspires the Next Generation

New York, NY., August 25, 2021 — When students go on break, many look for new and meaningful adventures. Something they can be proud of, something that they will remember for years to come. This summer, Jewish National Fund-USA (JNF-USA) again filled that need for 80 college students with its Alternative Break in Israel.

JNF-USA’s Alternative Break in Israel gives Jewish college students and young adults the opportunity to get their hands dirty while making a difference for the land and people of Israel. Each day of the trip is comprised of volunteering, touring, education, and independent time in the evenings and on Shabbat. Participants are responsible for raising a minimum of $1,150 from at least five unique donors for JNF-USA's Go North Campaign. Once students reach the fundraising minimum, JNF-USA covers their round-trip flight to Israel, accommodations, most meals, and medical insurance.

Head of Alternative Break Rafi Glazer said: “These students from across America had an amazing experience in Israel. In addition to raising almost $100,000 for JNF-USA projects and spending the week doing important and necessary work to help countless Israelis, they also got to hear some amazing stories of Israeli coexistence and everyday life and learned about important JNF-USA initiatives like the Galilee Culinary Institute by JNF-USA and the 9/11 Living Memorial.”

In just one week, students packed over 550 boxes of food for needy families, repainted several community centers, baked and donated 5 dozen challot, and raised almost $100,000 for JNF-USA’s Go North campaign, a strategic initiative to strengthen and grow the Galilee region, which is vital for the long-term prosperity of the Jewish homeland. The students also made a connection to the land and people of Israel that will last a lifetime.

Ethan Turok, a student at Columbia University, said: “JNF-USA has transformed my summer with their incredible and powerful programming. From packing food for the hungry to volunteering on a farm, I’ve not only helped those in need, but I’ve also bonded with my friends over our shared love for Israel. It has been a true blessing to meet so many passionate Zionists who care deeply about the future of American Jewry and Israel. I can’t wait to continue our trip with the JNF-USA!”

Glazer added: “They had an amazing energy and attitude even in the hot summer heat, singing and dancing to make the work even more enjoyable. Most importantly, they are all really excited to come back to Israel this winter to volunteer on our Alternative Winter Break in December.”
