For Richard and Barbara Rosenberg (z”l), supporting the Jewish community and Israel was a value, and a way of life. From modest beginnings in Massachusetts, they went on to establish a home and family in San Francisco where they raised two sons, Peter and Michael, and eventually welcomed five grandsons, all of whom carry on the couple’s commitment to making a difference for Jewish causes. “They were really decent people,” shared their son, Peter. “They were fortunate enough to become very successful both financially and socially and they wanted to make sure that others benefitted from their good fortune, especially in the Jewish community and in Israel.”

It was a friend who brought them into the Jewish National Fund world. Dick Berman fondly remembers having “coffee with the commander” as they reminisced about their military services. “Richard had an incredible grasp of the world of Jewish philanthropy and was always so insightful. Our projects at Jewish National Fund consistently caught his attention,” shared Dick. Dick recalls Richard having a wonderful sense of humor, and Barbara, too, was well-known throughout the community for her bright and lively spirit. Beloved by their community, friends, and family, they made a point to lead by example. “They were never afraid to solicit for the things they gave to themselves,” said Peter. “They had high expectations and led by example.”

Through a Charitable Remainder Trust, Richard was able to provide for Barbara after his death and give to a cause that was close to their hearts: the land and the people of Israel. Upon Barbara’s passing, Jewish National Fund received 50% of the trust’s remainder and a significant distribution from the couple’s revocable trust to continue their support, in particular for the Galilee Culinary Institute by JNF and the World Zionist Village.

Peter shared that due to their largely local involvement, the gift to JNF came as a bit of a surprise, but it made perfect sense once they learned more. “My dad was passionate about Jewish education, community, and Israel, so we were more than happy to carry out his wishes.”
