Jewish National Fund-USA’s Women’s Mission to Israel is approaching its 20th anniversary, celebrating the power of bringing women together and fostering meaningful connections with the land, the people of Israel, and each other.
“Going to Israel with a group of women sponsored by Jewish National Fund-USA has strengthened my identity as a Jewish woman,” said Linda Plotnick, a recent participant from Pennsylvania.
Formerly known as “The Queen of Sheba Mission,” the trip welcomes Jewish women of all ages and backgrounds on an in-depth journey through Israel. It introduces them to Jewish National Fund-USA’s efforts to revitalize the North and South, to the history hidden within Jerusalem’s walls, and the breathtaking starry nights of the Negev Desert.
“I had not been involved with Jewish National Fund-USA at all since I was a child in Hebrew school, putting money in my blue box,” said Beverly Kahn from Boston. Not knowing anyone, she took the leap, went for it, and had the time of her life. Her personal highlight was seeing a Jewish National Fund-USA-supported band of soldiers with disabilities perform. “It just struck a real chord in my heart. I was so proud that we’re helping in a tangible way."
Many women who join the mission have little to no firsthand knowledge of Jewish National Fund-USA’s work before arriving in Israel.
“Because I was going to travel alone in any case, traveling with a group of women felt good—and it was,” said Linda Plotnick. “There’s still a WhatsApp group from the mission”
While each woman has her favorite part of the trip, the clear highlights for everyone are the friendships built and the renewed connection to our Jewish homeland.
“I’ve become a serious supporter because of the trip,” said Rose Dessau, a Chicago native with no previous involvement in the organization who joined the mission.
“It just really was eye-opening in terms of the wonderful work that they do in cities like Be’er Sheva.”
Reflecting on their time in Israel, the women who joined the mission looked back with only fond memories: “It just felt perfect. I’m very glad I did it,” shares Linda. “To tell you the truth, I would love to go back.”
