JERUSALEM - May 1, 2025: As fast-moving wildfires sweep across the outskirts of Jerusalem and beyond, Jewish National Fund-USA—the official U.S. fundraising arm of Israel's Fire & Rescue Authority—launched an emergency campaign (jnf.org/fires) to provide critical support for Israel's brave firefighters.
"This morning, I awoke to the devastating sight of fires sweeping across the Jerusalem area, and I couldn't help but wonder—how much more can the heart endure?" said Jewish National Fund-USA President, Deb Lust Zaluda. "Yet, in the midst of this sacred week, Israel's firefighters—true national heroes—are once again risking their lives to protect others."
The fires intensified as Israel marked Yom Ha'Zikaron (Memorial Day) and prepared to celebrate Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Independence Day).
The organization's Fire & Rescue Task Force Chair, Penny Rosen, said, "Watching the land we love burn is unbearable. While these flames threaten trees and homes, they will never burn our hope or desire to strive for better days ahead. We stand united—not just to fight the fires but to reignite the spirit of resilience that has always defined our land and people of Israel. With the unwavering support of our Jewish National Fund-USA partners (donors), we will rebuild just as we have for over 124 years. We will not let the smoke of destruction cloud our vision for a stronger tomorrow."
Steve Dabrow, Jewish National Fund-USA Eastern PA Board President and a major philanthropic supporter of Israel's firefighters through the organization, is currently in Israel on one of its missions. "We are here in Jerusalem where the air is thick with smoke," Dabrow said. "Our hearts go out to everyone battling the blazes and to the affected communities. My wife Lori and I feel blessed to have donated many fire trucks and other equipment to Israel's heroic firefighters, so they are prepared to respond when crises like this arise. Being here in Israel as part of a Jewish National Fund-USA mission deepens our connection with our homeland. Despite the current challenges, we will overcome this together – united."
As part of Jewish National Fund-USA's circles of impact, where every philanthropic investment is made as part of a broader strategic vision to strengthen Israel's land and people, the organization has had a long-standing partnership with Israel's Fire & Rescue Authority.
Over the decades, Jewish National Fund-USA has provided over 300 fire trucks and firefighting apparatus, built numerous fire stations along with emergency response centers across the country.
Meanwhile, American students are assembling emergency respite packages for first responders at the organization's Alexander Muss High School in Israel. Their efforts reflect the unity and solidarity that the American Jewish and broader communities feel towards the land and people of Israel.
