Sharon Joy Reflects on 25 Years with Jewish National Fund-USA and the Unexpected Journey Her Life Took
For Sharon Joy, Jewish National Fund-USA’s National Campaign Director based in Los Angeles, this year marks an incredible milestone: 25 years of service. In an era where just 65% of Gen Z plans to stay at their current position for less than a year, Sharon’s story stands out as a testament to a career filled with passion and perseverance.
From the Music Industry to Philanthropy
Sharon’s professional life began in a very different world. In the 1980s and 90s, she worked in Israel’s vibrant music industry for CBS Records, later Sony Music, where she worked with Israel’s biggest artists and rubbed shoulders with international superstars including Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and more. “I came from the music industry. That’s what I knew,” Sharon shared. But when she moved to Boston in 1999, she found herself at a crossroads, uncertain about her next steps.

“People in Boston would tell me, ‘You’re so passionate about Israel. Why don’t you do something for Israel?’” Sharon recalls. After some reflection and through a friend’s connection, she was introduced to Jewish National Fund-USA and its CEO, Russell Robinson, who was recruited a year earlier in 1998 by the venerable philanthropist Ronald S. Lauder to lead the organization. What began as a part-time fundraising role soon turned into a calling.
“At first, I thought Jewish National Fund-USA was a steppingstone to return to music,” Sharon admitted. “But the work we do is so incredible and meaningful that I chose to stay. And I’ve loved it every year since.”

Memorable Highlights and Transformative Projects
Over the past 25 years, Sharon has witnessed the growth and transformation of Jewish National Fund-USA and its impact on the land and people of Israel. She fondly recalls projects that hold personal significance, such as Green Horizons, a Jewish National Fund-USA program that focuses on youth leadership, and the creation of Israel’s largest amphitheater in Beersheba, a nod to her music industry roots.
“I wasn’t blessed with my own children, but supporting our youth leadership initiatives allows me to help shape the future leaders of Israel,” she said. “And founding Jewish National Fund-USA’s Arts and Entertainment Task Force was a dream come true. We’ve supported countless initiatives, from music conservatories to performance spaces, ensuring communities across Israel have access to arts and culture.”
Sharon also beams with pride about her work with the Go North campaign – and for a good reason. The transformative initiative is boosting population and economic growth in Israel’s North and showcases the organization’s “Circle of Impact.”
“The collaboration with regional councils and mayors ensures our efforts are impactful and community-driven,” she explained. “Seeing Israelis thank us with tears in their eyes for improving their lives is indescribable.”

The Evolution of Jewish National Fund-USA
Reflecting on the organization’s growth, Sharon marvels at its evolution. “When I started, Jewish National Fund-USA was raising about $18 million annually. Now, we’ve surpassed $200 million. It’s miraculous,” she said. “Our shift from projects to vision—focusing on employment, population growth, and community building—has had a profound impact on Israel.”
Sharon credits much of this success to the organization’s unique structure. “As a lay leader-driven organization, we turn ideas into reality. From building medical centers to creating educational programs, it all starts with a vision. Watching those dreams come true is what keeps me passionate.”

Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation
For those starting their careers, Sharon’s advice is simple: “Follow your heart and listen to the universe. You never know where life will take you.” Her own career—spanning two vastly different industries—is a testament to this philosophy. “I never planned to work in music or philanthropy, but both have brought me immense fulfillment.”
Looking Ahead
As she looks to the future, Sharon’s hopes for Jewish National Fund-USA are clear. “May we continue to grow, build, and help people,” she said. “While we focus on the land of Israel, it’s the people who inspire me. Hearing their gratitude for the work we do is the greatest reward.”
Sharon also dreams of greater awareness for Jewish National Fund-USA. “Our biggest challenge is that people don’t always know what we do. But when they learn, their reaction is always ‘Wow.’ That’s when they become part of our family.”
After 25 years, Sharon Joy remains as passionate and dedicated as ever. Her journey is a shining example of how following one’s heart can lead to a life of purpose and impact. “I’ve had two incredible careers,” she reflected. “But raising funds for Israel is the greatest honor of my life.”
