It's never too late for your first visit to Israel

| Emmanuel Berrelleza
Picture1

My name is Emmanuel Berrelleza and I'm a Dartmouth graduate from Las Vegas and an incoming student at Harvard Law School. I studied government and English in college while participating in activities geared toward a career in public service. Before law school, I am teaching English literature at my previous high school located in an under-resourced community. The current public education system does not fully seize the potential of disadvantaged youth. This perpetuates economic and social inequities that I aim to help reduce through the classroom. My experiences as an educator in my community alongside my global travels will inform my legal degree as I consider careers intersecting education and international law.

In my pursuit of rigorous exploration, I applied to become a Caravan for Democracy participant to gain various perspectives on Israel’s history, culture, and political economy. I have never traveled to Israel. Given Israel’s history and continued relevance to U.S. interests in the Middle East, it is certainly a region worth learning as much as possible about. During the mission, I expect to gain a wide range of perspectives on Israel from various walks of life. To this extent, I maintain an open mind to the highly complex considerations at play that currently surpass my understanding. I look forward to engaging in dialogue with those in attendance, invited speakers, and ask the tough questions that will inform my perspectives. My understanding of Israel is a life-long pursuit, and this experience is the first of many to come.
