Rebuilding Hope: Jewish National Fund-USA’s Unbreakable Commitment to Israel’s North and South

At the Jerusalem Post Conference in Miami, Jewish National Fund-USA President Deb Lust Zaluda offered a heartfelt and inspiring update on the organization’s pivotal role in supporting the land and people of Israel throughout the current crisis. In a wide-ranging discussion with Jerusalem Post Diaspora Affairs Reporter, Michael Starr, Zaluda reflected on the resilience of Israel’s tourism industry, the steadfast commitment of donors, and the transformative initiatives Jewish National Fund-USA is spearheading to rebuild and strengthen communities affected by war and hardship.

Resilient Tourism Amid Challenges

Despite significant obstacles—from the COVID-19 pandemic to October 7—Zaluda highlighted the unwavering determination of travelers committed to visiting Israel. During the pandemic, Jewish National Fund-USA innovated with virtual tours, engaging over 50,000 participants worldwide. More recently, as tourism rebounded, the organization welcomed approximately 4,000 volunteers since late 2023 to help rebuild communities in Israel’s north and south.

“Our volunteers don’t just visit,” Zaluda shared. “They roll up their sleeves, rebuild, pick fruits and vegetables, pull weeds, paint, and plant flowers, ensuring Israel remains beautiful and ready to welcome visitors.”

Philanthropy: A Pillar of Strength

The steadfast support of its partners (donors) remains a cornerstone of Jewish National Fund-USA’s impact. Reflecting on the past fiscal year, Zaluda revealed record-breaking fundraising efforts, with over $200 million raised—$80 million beyond their goal. Notably, these contributions included both emergency funds for rebuilding southern Israel and general support for ongoing initiatives.

“We’ve retained many new donors because people are committed,” she explained. “Our supporters like to see where their dollars are going, and with Jewish National Fund-USA, they always can.”

In terms of transparency, Jewish National Fund-USA maintains Charity Navigators highest 4-star rating, which it has held for over 10 years, placing it among just 3% of charities to hold this rating during the same time period. The organization also comes recommended by the Better Business Bureau.

Transforming Communities: Initiatives on the Ground

Zaluda outlined Jewish National Fund-USA’s active role in responding to the needs of communities in the wake of the October 7 attacks. The organization was on the ground immediately, relocating 30,000 people from the Gaza border region, supporting evacuees, and initiating plans for rebuilding.

Key projects include:

  • A 30,000-Square-Foot Community Center in Shlomit: This new facility will serve as a hub for families, including widows who lost loved ones defending neighboring communities.
  • A New High School in the Arava: Adam Va Adama, a boarding school dedicated to the development of the Negev, recently opened its doors to students.
  • Medical Centers in the North: Ongoing construction of medical centers, such as in Kiryat Shmona, aims to support the growing population and ensure essential healthcare access.
  • Emergency Response Centers: Plans are underway to establish additional centers to bolster security in northern communities.

“We’re not just helping these communities recover,” Zaluda said. “We’re building them back stronger, creating vibrant places that people want to move back to.”

Recognizing Committment

During the event, Zaluda accepted an award on behalf of Jewish National Fund-USA CEO, Russell F. Robinson, in recognition of his support for the land and people of Israel. Reflecting on Robinson's award, Zaluda said, "knowing Russell, he would be the first to dedicate the recognition to the people of Israel's north and south, and to the Jewish National Fund-USA's professional team and donors who make everything possible."

Looking Ahead with Hope

With initiatives spanning from the Gaza border to the northern regions of Israel, Jewish National Fund-USA is committed to ensuring that communities not only survive but thrive. Zaluda concluded with a message of gratitude, emphasizing the importance of unity between Israel and the diaspora.

“These incredible projects are made possible because of the unwavering support of our global Jewish community,” she said. “We are deeply grateful and committed to making every contribution count.”

Jewish National Fund-USA’s work is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the power of philanthropy, and the enduring bond between Israel and its supporters around the world.
