Travel to Israel with Jewish National Fund-USA Sunshine Tour
ON A SUNDAY EVENING in early November 2021, 35 strangers across the United States gathered in a Tel Aviv hotel. Most were first-time travelers to Israel and had a minimal connection with Jewish National Fund-USA. Others had visited Israel before but not in many years. Their reasons for coming to Israel were varied, but the urge to connect with their Judaism was a common sentiment.
They longed for a memorable opportunity so joined Jewish National Fund-USA’s Sunshine Tour, a 10-day excursion through Israel described by many as “life-changing.”
Jewish National Fund-USA’s Sunshine Tour is uniquely designed for those over 55 and typically attracts active adults through their 80’s. The pace of this 10-day tour is a bit slower than many Jewish National Fund-USA's missions, taking a little more time to experience as much as possible.
Our groups tour Tel Aviv, Old Jaffa, the Palmach Museum and the bustling shops on Sheinkin Street, to name a few highlights, feeling the pride in this tiny country doing remarkable things. We visit Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust memorial, take guided tours through the museum. Our previous Sunshine Tour participants were engaged, asked questions and began to understand this tragic part of our history, unpacking why Israel is so important to Jews the world over.
We explore the Old City of Jerusalem, meet and talk with “lone soldiers” from the USA and hear what motivated them to travel halfway around the world to join the Israel Defense Forces. We visit the northern part of Israel, including the Golan and nearby areas, and journey south to the Negev Desert, witnessing up-close the effect and positive economic impact Jewish National Fund-USA projects have had in Be’er Sheva, the region’s largest city.
On Friday evening, we gather at the Kotel in Jerusalem, concluding our night with a meaningful Shabbat dinner.
