Sandy Haas didn’t grow up Jewish, nor did she expect that advocating for Israel in small communities across the United States would become her life’s mission. A former first-grade teacher and Christian woman living in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania, Sandy describes her path to Jewish National Fund–USA’s National Small Communities Committee as one guided by faith, values, and a commitment to supporting the Jewish people.

Long before she became involved as an advocate, Sandy felt a powerful connection to Israel. “I didn’t know much about Israel,” she recalls. “I didn’t even know where it was on a map. I just had this insatiable love for Israel and the Jewish people.”

After moving to Pennsylvania, Sandy started attending cultural events at a synagogue, where she formed friendships and learned more about Jewish life. It was there, in 2020, that she was first introduced to Jewish National Fund–USA and soon became actively involved with the organization.

Sandy began volunteering, attending conferences, and traveling to Israel on missions. In 2025, she joined the National Small Communities Committee, where she helps engage with Jewish people and allies living in communities of fewer than 5,000 people across the U.S. who want to connect and support Israel.

“Our small communities are isolated,” she explains. “So I try to make a heart connection.” For Sandy, that means getting to know people personally—sharing experiences, attending film screenings, exchanging ideas over meals—while strengthening their connection to Israel.

The impact has been deeply personal for Sandy, reminding us that the future of Israel is strengthened by allies who lead with heart, connection, and commitment—especially in small communities, where every relationship matters. As she says with a smile, “It’s my calling.”
