Israel’s heritage sites tell the story of our people, honoring those who came before us and ensuring future generations understand the sacrifices made for Israel’s survival. Ammunition Hill is one such site—the battleground that became the turning point in Jerusalem’s liberation during the Six-Day War. With the support of Jewish National Fund-USA, it stands as a landmark that symbolizes the eternal bond between Jerusalem and the Jewish people.

Story of the Site.

On June 6, 1967, 110 Israeli paratroopers were sent to capture Ammunition Hill, a key military command post located along what was then the Jordanian border. Believing they outnumbered the enemy forces—when in fact the numbers were equal—the paratroopers engaged in four hours of brutal fighting. Against all odds, the Israeli soldiers secured the hill. Thirty-six were killed, and 90 were wounded.

Why This Site Matters.

The victory at Ammunition Hill was crucial to the reunification of Jerusalem. The following day, the words “The Temple Mount is in our hands” were spoken and a 2,000-year-old dream was realized: Jews could once again pray at the Western Wall.

The Ammunition Hill Memorial Site and Museum honors all soldiers who served in the Six-Day War and commemorates the sacrifice of those who fell in the battle for Jerusalem. Visitors can explore preserved trenches and bunkers alongside immersive state-of-the-art exhibits that bring history to life. Jewish National Fund-USA has helped transform Ammunition Hill into a destination that offers inspiration, hope, and a deep sense of belonging for Zionists for generations to come.
