As unprecedented regional challenges confronted Israel, an initiative was launched to reconnect families: "Operation Hug." The program provides free round-trip flights for parents of lone combat soldiers—young men and women serving in the Israel Defense Forces who made aliyah (immigration to Israel) without immediate family—to reunite with their children during wartime.
For many of Israel’s 5,000 lone soldiers, the battlefield is not only dangerous but also isolating. The emotional burden becomes overwhelming without family nearby to offer comfort or reassurance. Operation Hug addresses these needs with action. Since it started in late 2023, the initiative has reunited over 1,200 families from more than 60 countries, each reunion providing a moment of healing and humanity amid chaos.
Israel's brave service men and women symbolize one kind of resilience; however, Operation Hug offers a different kind; one of nurture and comfort. There is something immeasurable about a parent’s embrace during war, and it’s that profound emotional impact that drives the campaign. As Jewish National Fund-USA CEO Russell F. Robinson says, “There is nothing like a parent’s hug in these challenging times.”
but in person.
At a time when the headlines have too often screamed of missiles and mayhem, Operation Hug serves as a vital initiative. Behind every uniform is a child - a son, a daughter, a loved one. Behind every mission, a parent’s prayer. As the people of Israel pray for better, brighter days ahead, Jewish National Fund-USA and its partners ensure that thousands of parents can hug their children once more.
Jewish National Fund-USA continues to attain the highest possible rating by the leading charity watchdog, Charity Navigator. The Better Business Bureau also recommends the organization as a trustworthy philanthropy. You can fully sponsor an Operation Hug reunion with a $3,600 gift.
