Mark Werner

Wednesday, February 16, 2022

7:00 pm ET / 4:00 pm PT

Mark Werner, son of a Holocaust survivor, is an ardent Zionist seeking a personal way to show support for Israel. Sar-El is an organization that enables thousands of volunteers from all over the world to work in a civilian capacity on Israeli military bases, freeing up IDF Soldiers for more serious duties. Join host Steven Shalowitz as he and Mark discuss his book is based on journals kept during his 14 Sar-El stints from 2006 to 2019. Werner describes working through a desert sandstorm, taking refuge in a bomb shelter during a Palestinian missile attack, and more. Go in depth into his experience with JNF-USA’s Special in Uniform, witnessed these youngsters working on IDF bases and saw how much their opportunity to serve meant to them and to their fellow soldiers. Through simple activities - from packing combat gear and medical supplies for the soldiers to filling sandbags and assembling tank antennas - the volunteers work hard to make their contributions to the defense of Israel

All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen

Bernice Lerner

Wednesday, April 27, 2022

7:00 pm ET / 4:00 pm PT

It has been 77 years since World War II ended, but it is our responsibility to ensure their stories and legacies live on. Join Reading Series host Steven Shalowitz with author Bernice Lerner as we recognize Yom Hashoah and share the remarkable stories of Rachel Genuth, a poor Jewish teenager from the Hungarian provinces, and Hugh Llewelyn Glyn Hughes, a high-ranking military doctor in the British Second Army, who converge in Bergen-Belsen, where the girl fights for her life and the doctor struggles to save thousands on the brink of death. Lerner, Rachel's daughter, has special insight into the torment her mother suffered. The first book to pair the story of a Holocaust victim with that of a liberator, All the Horrors of War compels readers to consider the full, complex humanity of both.
